Here’s the situation:
This is what we need to do:
We need to become a stronger, united, and unstoppable climate movement. To accomplish this, we need a movement plan and a marketing plan. Both parts are essential and connected. You can’t plan for the future without a marketing plan, and you can’t market the future without a clear and common vision, goals, and targets.
This site will show you what a movement plan and marketing campaigns could look like. The ideas and designs are free to use under a Creative Commons license. How you use them is up to you: in your own work, or collaboratively with others.
And for all you are already doing, thank you.
A simple plan can distill the complexity of our climate movement into the basic steps that will ensure success. It can:
Creative marketing and movement-wide campaigns can:
Here’s how we design the plan:
Consider, for a moment, that the climate movement is a social movement more than an environmental one. Everything hinges on the social mandate from people through our voices, votes, choices, and actions.
Now look at how we might design a self-reinforcing cycle and the actions that will get us there.
It’s that simple…. and that hard.
To get there we need all hands on deck – not to change what you are doing, but to look at how what you are doing can help build the cycle of action.
In a global climate movement, we are all catalysts for positive change.
Here’s one way to sell it:
That image is as simple as a blue ring that represents the atmosphere surrounding our planet.
Now imagine that symbol being everywhere: on social media, t-shirts, lawn signs, protest signs, store windows, government and business climate plans and programs, community projects, and associated with climate solutions. Think of it as a universal statement of support for climate leadership and action.
Can it help? Absolutely!
Think of what this image did to promote recycling around the world. It raised awareness, helped organizations, companies and governments promote their work, and created a visual statement of a common commitment.
Can we do better? Also absolutely!
We can connect the blue ring with common goals for climate action; develop movement-wide campaigns, promote and support climate leadership, support each other in our areas of expertise, support solutions – in particular solutions that connect climate action with social benefit – and turn global despair into hope and action,
Engage
Everyone can, and should, feel that that they are part of a global climate movement.
Through creative designs and adaptations of the blue ring, we can connect climate action with expressions of hope, commitment, and possibility, We can help build the social mandate for leadership and action.
Commit
Every government and business, global to local, should be a leader a global climate movement, leading the way, and helping us all become more climate-friendly.
We can design a movement-wide campaign to build a global climate movement that is all of us working together to help stop climate change.
Challenge
We can focus our protests on the laggards – those governments and companies that have not made a commitment to shift to a net-zero economy and society.
Organize
We can organize support networks, including community action networks and peer networks, to help each other find climate solutions that work for everyone.
Networks also help integrate a climate mandate with other social and economic goals, such as job creation, social equity, and healthy, vibrant communities.
Promote
A movement can also market solutions; solutions that improve our lives and create a new clean economy.
A marketing campaign can enlist local and international companies as allies in transforming our economy.
How do we make it happen?
No one owns a movement – but it is influenced and shaped by participating organizations, thought leaders, and innovators, and public opinion. Which means we make it happen simply by making it happen and letting it evolve as we go. We already have a movement. Let’s make it better.
