Ever get the feeling no one is listening to us?

Climate Strike Montreal, 2019

We research the science, find solutions, publish reports, educate and protest, and yet the largest, life-threatening, long-term crisis the world has ever known is still, at best, a secondary issue for most people, companies, and governments.

Here we are. On the cusp of unacceptable failure.

There has to be a better way.

And there is....

We can shape the climate movement into an unstoppable force for a better future.

Think Like a Movement

The first step is to acknowledge that we are a movement.

Like the civil rights. feminist, and gay rights movements before us, we are a social movement. We are people the world over calling out for leadership and action.

We are also unique. The climate movement started with scientists, was amplified by environmentalists, has become a field of professional expertise, and has found champions in corporations, governments, and the United Nations.

Together: all of us – people, experts, leaders, organizations, companies, and governments.

We are a global climate movement: supporting each other and collaborating towards common goals.

Unstoppable: empowering leadership and action, and rendering opposition irrelevant.

Here's what we have, and what we know.

We already have a movement.

We are citizens, NGOs, experts, governments, companies, and coordinating bodies. We are amazingly strong.

We have common ground.

For all the complexity of climate change and climate action, we have common values and goals, and a commitment to work together.

We have all the resources we need.

We already have scientists, governments, companies, solutions experts, innovators, and others working to find solutions.

We need public support.

We can’t get there without deep, long-lasting public support.  Everything we do needs to help people be resilient, save money, and live better.

We face strong opposition.

There are those who benefit from the status quo and who see political or economic benefit from sowing social discord. They are our primary foe.

We need to be focused.

We need to focus on the drivers of change, support and empower each other, find creative ways to engage people, and collaborate in finding solutions that make sense.

Here's what we need, and how we get there.

To get the world to act on climate change we need:

1.  A strong social mandate

  • based on common values of caring for each other and the planet, and
  • a foundation of common cause connecting climate action with a better future

which leads to…

2.  Strong government and corporate leadership

  • based on a commitment to achieve net-zero emissions from every level of government and every corporation
  • supported by experts and peer networks
which leads to…

3.  Strong climate plans

  • that stimulate action for net-zero emissions, climate resilience and a better future
  • that integrate climate action with economic development and social benefit
which leads to…

4.  Our best chance to minimize climate change and create a better future for all.

To achieve these steps, we need:

1.  Coordination

  • Common goals: A future that is net-zero, resilient and  better
  • a common plan, with common steps to achieving our goals
  • Common campaigns, with global to local adaptability

2.  Collaboration

  • between climate groups
  • across sectors and interests
  • empowering action in common cause
  • sharing ideas and resources freely

3.  Creativity

  • in strategic planning
  • in marketing and campaigns
  • in integrated climate solutions
Which leads to two important questions:
  1. How can a global climate movement help?
  2. How can you help?

What is the global climate movement?

We are already a movement. The only question is whether we make it a better.

What is a movement?

Nobody owns a movement.  It just is.

A movement forms around common cause; in this case, solving climate change.

Anyone and any organization or institution can be a “member” of the climate movement. This includes individuals, climate experts, organizations, companies and business leaders, and governments and politicians. This is a global movement, from small communities and organizations up to nation states and everything inbetween.

If you are part of the climate movement, you probably share common commitments, such as:

  • We are fully committed to achieving a future that is net-zero, resilient, and better for all
  • We will work together to remove barriers to action
  • We will work together to find fast, yet smooth pathways to achieve our goals
  • We will work together to help implement climate solutions

Members can promote their commitments and activities that support climate leadership and action as their contribution to the movement.

Not everyone will agree on all things. The important thing is that we agree on the common cause and the commitment to help each other.

How can we make it unstoppable?

1. Focus

Keep our eyes on the prize: solving climate change.

2. Be strategic.
Focus on the key steps to achieving our goal:

  • the social mandate
  • leadership
  • transition pathways
  • solutions people want

3.   Play to our strengths
We are an incredibly diverse and talented movement. Each of us has our areas of expertise and abilities that can help the climate  movement:

  • engage and enlist public support
  • challenge companies and governments to be climate leaders
  • organize communities and networks around leaderhip and transition pathways
  •  advise and support the development of pathways and solutions
  • support leadership and action.

4. Collaborate.
Collaboration is key, not just between like-minded members, but in ways that help us all be part of the  solution.

5. Be creative
Anyone can propose movement-based campaigns to promote common objectives. Whether they fly depends on who wants to support them.

Next steps and how you can help.

;There are plenty of ways that we can all help, from individuals and local groups to international organizations and climate leaders.  Here’s three examples:

Think like a movement
Think of how your actions can empower others to lead. As individuals, our votes, purchases, and actions create the demand for government and corporate leadership, which in turn can lead to products and services that can make climate action easy, affordable, and desirable.

Spread the word
Talk about the global climate movement on social media and to your friends, and colleagues. Match fear with hope. There are all kinds of people, organizations, and governments around the world working on solutions to climate change. Join us.

Build a campaign
What if we all worked together to build the global climate movement? Maybe set a target for every government, every company and everyone to be part of the global climate movement by the end of 2025? We could build the social mandate for climate leadership and action and promote 100% commitment to net-zero targets and climate plans.
