Vision and Goals

A Common Vision

For all its complexity, climate action can be distilled down to a single common vision:

We desire a future that is net-zero, resilient, and better.

There are three goals contained within the vision, and they are interconnected. They connect the environmental imperative of climate action with the need for solutions that will help people deal with climate impacts and even improve their lives.

A Visual Representation

The vision and goals can be represented visually with three circles, each containing an arrow to represent the goals.

The original design for the climate arrows was provided by Blue Planet Design. They are available for free use without attribution under a Creative Commons 0 license. This means anyone can use or adapt the image to promote their commitment to the cause or solutions that support climate leadership and action.

What do the arrows mean?

The power of a visual identity is that it instantly conveys our key message. We can add text to make the message clear, we can adapt the message for our target audience, but there should always be a consistent and common message: “This is climate action: net-zero, resilient, and a better future for all.”

The arrows are the main defining feature of the image. Each one relates to a specific goal.

red1

Net zero

Eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner.

green1

Resilient

Help people, communities, and countries prepare for, adapt to, and bounce back from climate impacts.

blue1

A better future for all

Create a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future for all.

Combine the three arrows, and you get a common vision for climate action: a future that is net-zero, resilient, and better.

Applications

The value of a common vision and goals lies in the ability to bind our many strengths and actions into common cause.

Leadership: the vision is a reminder of what is required – nothing short of the transition away from fossil fuels; investing in ecological, social, and economic resilience, and ensuring that all peoples have equal opportunities to a good life.

Empowerment: the vision supports a diverse climate movement, from activism to leadership and implementation.

Engagement: the vision is a clear and positive statement of the future we want.

Broader Applications

The arrows can also be used to represent a life philosophy based on respect for the planet and each other.

“Climate action” is Goal #13 of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development goals, and there is a strong link between the goals for climate action and the other 16 SDG goals, many of which relate to the quality of life of all people on the planet.
